Six centuries of Silk Road architecture, from a paper workshop to Registan's tilework

A private guided tour of Samarkand covers six major sites across 6 to 7 hours, starting with a visit to the Samarkand Handmade Paper Centre to learn the mulberry-paper technique revived from the VIII century, then moving through the Ulugbek Observatory, Shah-i-Zinda Necropolis, Bibi-Khanym Mosque, Gur-Amir Mausoleum and Registan Square. The Experience

You start at the Samarkand Handmade Paper Centre in the eastern suburbs, where a UNESCO-backed project has revived a 2,000-year-old craft. Watch artisans strip mulberry bark and transform it into the durable, insect-resistant paper that made Samarkand famous across the Silk Road. From there, the guide drives you through the city's historical layers: the Ulugbek Observatory, built in the XV century by an astronomer-king, then Shah-i-Zinda, a necropolis spanning XII to XX centuries where royal persons and nobles are buried—described as one of Uzbekistan's most spiritual places.

The route takes in Bibi-Khanym Mosque, a XV-century structure built to honor Temur's chief wife, and Gur-Amir Mausoleum, the XV-century tomb of the king. Between stops, the drive is 10 to 15 minutes each. The day ends at Registan Square, the architectural centerpiece: three XV to XVII-century madrassahs and mosques with Islamic designs and calligraphy etched into their facades. You move at your own pace, and the guide can adjust the itinerary to match what your group wants to focus on.

Dress code matters at the religious sites: shoulders and knees should be covered, and women should bring a headscarf or shawl for the holy places. The tour includes the vehicle and guide for the full 6 to 7 hours; entrance tickets to the monuments and lunch are separate. Infants can ride in a stroller, and the pace suits all fitness levels.

Is this one for you?If you're arriving in Samarkand without a car or staying in the city center, hotel pickup means you don't arrange your own transport between the six sites spread across the city—the guide handles the route and timing, so you move through the Silk Road sites in sequence without navigating between them yourself.
