The experience

The day starts with a short shuttle ride into the park, stopping first at Temple of Sinawava to hear the stories behind the ancient names. From there, a 1-mile walk on solid ground brings you to the actual trailhead where The Narrows hike begins: the main focus of the tour. What follows is up to 5 miles of hiking directly up the Virgin River, which means you'll be wading through water and stepping over rocks underfoot rather than walking a conventional trail. There's minimal elevation gain, but the terrain itself (the river bottom, the canyon walls closing in) is what makes this hike distinct.

Your guide is a naturalist trained in wilderness medicine, and they'll explain how this canyon was carved and what you're standing inside as you move upstream. The group stays small, capped at 8 hikers, which means you're not navigating crowds and the guide can actually answer questions. Snacks and beverages are provided during the day. You're welcome to bring lunch and eat at a spot your guide chooses. If The Narrows are closed on your tour date due to weather or water conditions, you'll still get a full day exploring other parts of Zion with the same guide and itinerary adjusted to what's open.

Gear for The Narrows (neoprene socks, water shoes, and sometimes a wetsuit depending on the season) is available to rent at Zion Outfitter before the tour enters the park, or you can reserve it ahead. The tour runs 6 to 8 hours total. Round-trip transport from Springdale is included, and park entry fees are covered. International visitors may owe an additional National Park entrance fee collected on the day.
