experience

What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed stepping out of the car was how quiet it gets out here—just a faint breeze and the crunch of sand under boots. We started early, before the sun really got going, because locals say summer heat can sneak up fast. Our guide, Mike from Kanab Tours, handed out cold water and double-checked our gear before we hit the trail.

The hike itself isn’t paved or marked—mostly soft sand that makes your calves work a bit harder than you’d expect. There’s this dry, earthy smell mixed with sagebrush as you walk. It took us about an hour and a half to reach the first set of teepee rocks. They’re taller than they look in photos, striped with reds and oranges that change as the light shifts. We had the whole place to ourselves; not another soul in sight except for a lizard darting by.

Between the north and south teepees is just a short walk—maybe 15 minutes if you don’t stop for too many pictures (which is tough). The formations are different up close; one has these odd little pockets where birds nest. Mike pointed out some fossil imprints on a nearby rock—something I’d have missed without him. The whole hike took us about six hours round-trip, including plenty of breaks to catch our breath and just take it all in.
