“That one’s Courthouse Butte—looks like it’s been there forever, right?” That’s how our guide, Mike, kicked things off as we rolled out of Uptown Sedona in the van. I could smell juniper through the cracked window and honestly, I didn’t expect to feel so small under all that sky. We zigzagged past Bell Rock (which is way rounder than I thought) and Mike told us about how locals say the rocks have their own kind of energy. I’m not sure if I felt it or just got swept up in everyone else’s excitement—maybe both.

We stopped at the Chapel of the Holy Cross next, which kind of juts out from the red cliffs like it belongs there. Inside was quiet, almost heavy with silence, except for a couple whispering in Spanish near the candles. Outside, I tried to get a photo but my phone camera couldn’t really handle those colors—the rocks were almost glowing against the blue sky. Mike offered to help with some phone photography tricks (he actually knows his stuff), though I still managed to get my thumb in one shot. Oh well.

I liked Boynton Canyon best—there was this dry pine smell and a weird hush even though there were other people around. Lunch was in Uptown Sedona (not included), and I just grabbed a sandwich at a busy deli where everyone seemed to be talking about hiking trails. The van ride after that felt slower; maybe it was the heat or maybe we were all just thinking about what we’d seen. On the drive back, someone pointed out Amitabha Stupa and Peace Park and we made a quick stop—there were prayer flags snapping in the wind and a couple locals meditating under Thunder Mountain.

I keep thinking about that view from Airport Overlook—windy up there, sun sharp on my face—and how different Sedona looked from every angle we stopped at. It’s not really something you can explain until you’re there yourself.
