Scuba Diving at Ni'ihau: Certified divers, small groups
Two dives on Ni'ihau's walls, with monk seals and manta rays between sites
Certified scuba divers descend two sites off Ni'ihau, the forbidden island, with an English-speaking guide keeping you safe and pointing out large marine life. The boat leaves Kikiaola harbor at 6:30 am for a one-hour crossing. Between dives, you tour Lehua Crater (an extinct volcano now a seabird sanctuary), while eating lunch. Groups stay under six divers, and the crossing cuts travel time roughly in half compared to other operators.
The experience
You need to be a certified diver with at least 15 dives logged before booking this one. Ni'ihau's reputation rests on vertical walls that drop seemingly without end, water so clear you see the topography shift beneath you, and marine life that shows up reliably: sandbar sharks, Hawaiian monk seals found nowhere else on earth, walls of butterfly fish, and manta rays. The operator runs groups of six divers maximum, and your guide (either Nick or Jessie) stays underwater with you the whole time, pointing out what moves in the blue and keeping watch. Two separate dives hit different sites depending on conditions and what you want to see.
The day starts at 6:30 am at Kikiaola small boat harbor on Kauai's west side, where you try on gear before departure. The crossing takes around an hour. The ride home runs one to ninety minutes depending on weather and swell. Between dives, the boat anchors at Lehua Crater, an extinct volcano that is now a seabird sanctuary. You eat lunch there and tour the crater by boat, spotting seabirds and the rock formation locals call the Keyhole. The crew watches for dolphins and manta rays on the way around. Bottled water, snacks, lunch, and all scuba equipment are included. There is a bathroom on board.
October through April, weather makes Ni'ihau harder to reach. If conditions close the site, the dive moves to the south side of Kauai instead, and you get a 45 percent refund. A four-diver minimum runs the tour, so if the group does not fill, the operator will contact you. Bad weather can also reroute the dive even after you arrive. The operator asks for your arrival and departure dates when you book so they can plan around your schedule.

Is this one for you?Groups of six or fewer work best here: small enough that your guide stays close and the boat moves fast. If you have logged at least 15 dives and want to see monk seals and sharks on vertical walls without spending half the day in transit, the one-hour crossing from Kauai cuts your travel time roughly in half.

What marine life will I see diving at Ni'ihau?
Ni'ihau's sites are known for large wildlife: sandbar sharks, Hawaiian monk seals (found nowhere else on earth), walls of butterfly fish, and manta rays are common sightings. The vertical walls and clear visibility let you see what moves in the water from a distance.
What happens between the two dives?
Between dives, the boat anchors at Lehua Crater, an extinct volcano that is now a seabird sanctuary. You eat lunch there, tour the crater by boat to spot seabirds, and watch for dolphins and manta rays as the crew points out the rock formation called the Keyhole.
What if the weather is bad and we can't dive Ni'ihau?
If weather closes Ni'ihau, the dive moves to the south side of Kauai instead. You receive a 45 percent refund for the reroute. October through April, weather makes Ni'ihau harder to reach, so the operator asks for your arrival and departure dates when you book.
