The experience
Koloa Landing is where the dive shop meets the water. You'll check in at the shop, get your gear fitted and prepped, then head to the site by transport. Before you enter the water, your instructor walks you through SCUBA theory, equipment use, hand signals, and the techniques you'll need: all on land, at your own pace. Once you're ready, you move into the shallow zone to practice what you just learned until the movements feel natural and you're breathing steadily underwater.
Then you dive the reef. Your instructor stays with you the whole time, watching your comfort and keeping you safe while you explore coral formations and the fish that live in them. A single dive lasts roughly 30 to 45 minutes and takes you down to a maximum of 40 feet. If you choose the two-tank option, you'll surface, rest briefly, and then descend into a second reef area with its own character and marine life. Throughout, you're looking for the green sea turtles the site is known for, the rainbow of tropical fish, and if conditions align, rays or dolphins passing through.
After your last dive, the shop transports you back and you're done. You'll have completed the basics of open-water diving and learned what it takes to continue toward a full SCUBA certification if you want to. The whole experience runs about four and a half hours from check-in to return.
