The Experience

"You sure you’ve got enough water?" That’s what our guide, Marco, asked as we stood next to these chunky UTVs in the dust outside Scottsdale. I already felt the sun on my neck—dry and sharp even at 9am. Helmets on, goggles down, someone’s phone playing a scratchy country song. The Sonoran Desert looked endless from that parking lot, but once we started rolling into Tonto National Forest, it was all movement—sand kicking up behind us, saguaro cacti like weird green arms waving hello or maybe warning us off.

I’ll admit I was nervous about the whole “up to 40 mph” thing (I’m not exactly Evel Knievel), but after the first ten minutes Marco stopped us and shuffled the group around. "Go at your own pace," he said. I hung back a bit—no shame there—and honestly, it let me catch more of those tiny yellow flowers peeking out from under rocks. There was this moment when we paused in a wash and you could hear nothing but wind and someone’s laugh echoing off the hills. I still think about that silence.

Marco would pull us over every so often—sometimes to point out barrel cactus or check if anyone needed more water (yes, again), sometimes just for photos. He took one of me with my hair sticking out from under my helmet like a tumbleweed—free photography is part of the tour, which is good because my hands were too dusty for my own camera anyway. By the end of those two hours, my face hurt from grinning and there was grit in places I didn’t know could get gritty. We rolled back to our cars tired but sort of wired—I didn’t expect to feel that much energy after just riding around in the desert.
