The experience
The Hummer H1 is military-grade engineering in civilian hands: a 4x4 built to handle mud, dirt, water and rocks without hesitation. After meeting your guide at the WeKoPa resort, you drive about ten minutes to the trailhead in Tonto National Forest, then spend two hours in the vehicle itself, crossing sandy washes and river beds that define the terrain. The Superstition Mountains and views of Saguaro Lake and the Salt River frame the route as you climb and descend, feeling the suspension work beneath you.
Your guide shares the history of the area and points out the plants and animals of the Sonoran Desert: saguaro cactus, creosote, the wildlife adapted to this heat. You stop at viewpoints to photograph, drink water and eat snacks. The whole experience is built around what the vehicle can do rather than what you watch from a distance: you're steering through the landscape, not observing it from a paved overlook.
Hotel pickup and drop-off are included if your group has four or more people. Smaller groups arrange their own transport to WeKoPa. Children from age three can join. The tour is not recommended for pregnant travelers or anyone with spinal injuries, but it suits all other fitness levels. Bring sunscreen and wear clothes that can get dusty.

Is this one for you?The Hummer H1 is built for terrain that stops regular vehicles, so you reach river beds and rocky washes most desert tours skip. If you're without a car or staying away from the trailhead, hotel pickup for groups of four or more means you don't arrange your own transport to the starting point.

What is the Hummer H1 and why does it matter for this tour?
The Hummer H1 is the closest a civilian can get to military-spec engineering. Its 4x4 system and high ground clearance let it cross river beds and rocky terrain that would strand a standard vehicle, so you reach parts of Tonto National Forest most tours cannot access.
How much of the four hours do I actually spend off-road in the Hummer?
You spend two hours driving the trails themselves after a ten-minute drive from WeKoPa to the trailhead. The rest of the time covers the drive to and from the resort, stops for photos and snacks, and your guide's commentary on the landscape.
What does the guide teach about the desert?
Your guide covers the history of the area and explains the plants and animals of the Sonoran Desert, including the saguaro cactus and the wildlife adapted to the heat and terrain.
Is hotel pickup included, and does it matter where I'm staying?
Hotel pickup and drop-off are included if your group has four or more people. Groups of three or fewer arrange their own transport to WeKoPa resort, where you meet your guide.
