You'll be driving your own UTV sand buggy through Tonto National Forest, following an expert guide across winding trails while the sky turns gold and orange behind the mountains. It's not a passenger ride—you're in control the whole time, which changes how the desert feels. The trails wind past saguaro cacti (the only desert where they grow), and if it's been rainy, you might cross a river. Your guide points out wildlife and plants along the way, explaining what survives out here and why.

Desert Dog has been running sunset ATV tours in Scottsdale for more than 27 years, so they've timed this down to the light. Halfway through, you'll stop for water and snacks while the views stretch out—Saguaro Lake and the Four Peaks Mountain Range are visible from up there. That's when most people swap drivers if there are two of you, so both of you get seat time. The whole thing is built around catching that window when the desert is most itself, not too hot, not dark yet.

You need a valid driver's license to get behind the wheel, and the company asks for at least moderate fitness—the terrain is rough and the UTV bounces. Helmets are provided. If you're traveling solo or with someone who doesn't want to drive, you can ride as a passenger (minimum age 8), but the tour is really designed for two people taking turns.
