The Experience

The first thing I noticed was how quiet it got when we pulled off near Horseshoe Falls. It’s that kind of hush where you can actually hear the water tumbling over rocks, and then—out of nowhere—a bird call cuts through. Our guide, Matt, leaned out his window and pointed up. “That’s a Clark’s nutcracker,” he said. I’d never heard of it. He knew every twist of Trail Ridge Road like he’d driven it a thousand times (probably had), but still seemed excited by each turn.

Driving our own car felt weirdly personal for a day trip in Rocky Mountain Park. Matt just hopped in the passenger seat and started chatting about elk habits and which valleys moose liked best this time of year. We stopped at the Alluvial Fan and he showed us how to frame photos so the light caught on the spray—my phone pics actually look half-decent now. There was this moment at the Alpine Tundra where the wind nearly knocked my hat off, and I could smell snow somewhere upwind even though it was June. The air stung my nose in a good way.

I didn’t expect to feel so small on Trail Ridge Road—12,183 feet is no joke. We kept climbing until everything outside looked like another planet: patches of snow clinging to brown grass, sky so close you felt like you could touch it if you tried hard enough (I did). At the Alpine Visitor Center, Matt laughed when I tried to pronounce “Kawuneeche.” He bought coffee from a little kiosk while we wandered around looking for marmots. I still think about that view over the Continental Divide—felt like standing on top of everything, just quiet except for wind and distant voices from other travelers. Hard to explain unless you’ve been up there.
