The experience

The tour starts and ends at Purple Points Tour Company's downtown Estes Park storefront at 165 Virginia Dr. You'll board the retractable glass-top van and head up Old Fall River Road, the original high alpine route through the park, climbing from forest through meadows to above tree line. The van's design matters here: as weather shifts rapidly at altitude, you can keep the glass roof and walls open for unobstructed views or close them for warmth and shelter without losing sight of the landscape. Most vans on this route don't offer that choice.

Halfway through, you'll stop at the Alpine Visitor Center, sitting at 11,796 feet: the highest visitors center in any national park. There's time to walk around, grab a coffee or snack from the cafeteria if it's open, and take in the views before continuing. Then comes Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuous paved highway in North America at 12,183 feet. You'll travel this stretch in the van, and the glass top is what makes it work: the alpine weather can turn fast, but you stay comfortable with full climate control while watching the tundra and distant peaks roll past. The snack and beverage bar on board keeps you hydrated and fed without stopping.

A short hike or two breaks up the driving. You'll see snow melt waterfalls and glaciers depending on the season and which option you choose. The guides are trained in the park's geology, ecology, and history, and they talk through what you're seeing as you climb. Park entrance fees are already included, so there's no separate ticket to buy at the gate. The whole experience runs between 3 hours and 40 minutes to 4 hours, and you're back at the storefront by early afternoon.
