The Experience

I didn’t expect to laugh so much trying to figure out the ebike — it’s easier than it looks, but my first few minutes were wobbly. The air in Estes Park was cooler than I thought for July, kind of sharp and piney. Our guide, Jamie, had this habit of waving at almost everyone we passed; apparently everyone knows each other here. We started right in downtown Estes Park, dodging a couple of dogs on leashes and that smell from the bakery drifting over Main Street. I think someone was roasting coffee nearby too.

The ride along the lake was quieter — just the soft hum of our bikes and birds somewhere up in the trees. Jamie stopped us by a bench where you could see the whole Rocky Mountain backdrop reflected in the water. It’s one of those views you try to take a photo of but it never quite matches what your eyes see. I remember running my hand along a wooden fence there, rough from sun and weather — tiny detail but it stuck with me for some reason.

We made a stop at what Jamie called “the first dude ranch around here,” though I’ll admit I still don’t totally get what makes it a dude ranch (he explained but my brain wandered). Then came the old hotel — supposedly haunted? Jamie told us stories about guests seeing lights flicker or hearing footsteps at night. I half-wanted to go inside just to see if anything weird happened, but we stayed outside and listened while he pointed out some original stonework under our feet.

Honestly, I was nervous about keeping up on an ebike, but after that first stretch it felt like coasting — wind in my face and no real effort. The whole day trip around Estes Park was less about ticking off sights and more about those little moments: Jamie’s stories, that cold bottle of water after a hill, or just watching locals wave as we rode by. Still think about that lake view sometimes.
