The Experience

Hands folded behind his back, our guide just looked out over the water for a moment before saying anything. I was still thinking about that film at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center—the old radio crackle, black-and-white faces, and then you’re suddenly on a Navy boat crossing the harbor. The ride is only ten minutes but it felt longer, like everyone was quieter than usual. I could smell sunscreen and something metallic in the air—maybe just nerves? Or maybe that’s what history smells like sometimes.

Stepping onto the white span of the USS Arizona Memorial, I didn’t expect how silent it would be. Not forced silence, just… nobody wanted to break it. You can see the outline of the ship right below your feet, and those little oil droplets floating up—they call them “the tears of the Arizona.” Our guide didn’t say much here (which I appreciated), except to point out some names on the wall at the end. I tried to imagine being seventeen or eighteen and suddenly part of something so big and tragic. It’s hard not to get stuck in your own head for a minute.

Back on land, we wandered through more exhibits—actual letters home, uniforms behind glass—and then hopped in an air-conditioned van for downtown Honolulu. The city feels different after Pearl Harbor; brighter somehow but also heavier? We drove past Punchbowl Crater, where rows of white headstones curve along green hillsides. At Iolani Palace, our guide “talked story” about Hawaii’s last monarchs—King Kalākaua and Queen Liliʻuokalani—and I realized how little I’d really known about this place before today. There was a breeze coming off the ocean when we stopped by King Kamehameha’s statue; someone had left fresh lei around his neck. It smelled faintly sweet even from across the street.

I keep thinking about that quiet on the memorial boat ride back—how everyone seemed lost in their own thoughts but also kind of connected by what we’d seen together. Weird how travel days like this stick with you longer than you expect.
