The experience

The tour starts with round-trip airfare from the Big Island to Honolulu International Airport, where ground transport picks you up and delivers you back at the end of the day. That arrangement means you don't need a rental car or local knowledge to reach Pearl Harbor. You arrive, step into an air-conditioned vehicle, and the guide handles the rest. The day runs 9 to 11 hours from pickup to drop-off.

At Pearl Harbor Visitor Center, you'll watch a 23-minute documentary about the December 7, 1941 attack, then board a U.S. Navy boat for a 10-minute ride to the USS Arizona Memorial. The memorial is a white, open-air structure spanning the sunken battleship. Inside, you can look down into the water to see the ship's outline and the oil droplets still rising to the surface, known as "The Tears of the Arizona." A wall at the far end bears the names of the 1,177 crew members who died. From there, the tour moves to the USS Bowfin Submarine (admission and narration headset included), then crosses to Ford Island for the USS Missouri Battleship, where you'll walk the deck of the "Mighty Mo." The USS Oklahoma Memorial, marked by 429 marble sticks representing the fallen, sits nearby. The Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum rounds out the harbor sites.

The second half shifts to downtown Honolulu's royal and civic landmarks. You'll see Iolani Palace, the only royal palace in the United States, and hear stories of King Kalākaua and Queen Liliʻuokalani. The King Kamehameha Statue stands in front of Ali'iolani Hale, the historic government building now housing the Hawaii State Supreme Court. Kawaiaha'o Church, called the "Westminster Abbey of the Pacific," is one of Hawaii's oldest Christian places of worship. The tour ends at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, perched on Punchbowl Crater, where white headstones overlook downtown Honolulu, Diamond Head and the coastline. Your guide narrates the history throughout the Honolulu portion, sharing stories of Hawaii's monarchy and the sites' significance.

All entry tickets are provided by your guide on the day of the tour. Meals are at your own expense, though food trucks and cafes operate at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center and near the Battleship Missouri. Wear comfortable shoes. You'll walk much of the day. Bags are not allowed inside Pearl Harbor (storage is $7 per bag), but clear plastic bags like those used at football games are permitted. Respectful silence is encouraged at the USS Arizona Memorial. The sites may close due to stormy weather, and USS Arizona Memorial advance passes are subject to availability. If unavailable, you may join the National Park Service standby line.
