The experience

Nine to ten hours gets you from Kona to four of Oahu's main stops and back. Round-trip airfare to Honolulu is included, along with entry to Pearl Harbor, the USS Arizona Memorial, Dole Plantation, and Polynesian Cultural Center: your guide hands you the tickets on the morning of the tour. You travel in an air-conditioned van with a local guide who shares stories throughout the day.

Pearl Harbor starts with exhibits on the December 7, 1941 attack, then a 23-minute documentary about its impact. A 10-minute boat ride takes you out to the USS Arizona Memorial, the white open-air structure built over the sunken battleship. You'll see the shipwreck and the oil droplets known as "The Tears of the Arizona," and a wall listing the 1,177 fallen crew members. The atmosphere is one of reflection. Visitors are asked to maintain respectful silence. At Dole Plantation, you can browse the gift shop for pineapple-themed souvenirs and local crafts, taste a Dole Whip soft-serve, or walk the gardens to see the Rainbow Eucalyptus trees with their striking multi-colored bark. The drive includes North Shore views of world-famous surf spots like Banzai Pipeline, Waimea Bay, and Sunset Beach, plus panoramic views of Chinaman's Hat and the Kualoa mountain range.

Polynesian Cultural Center is the day's longest stop. You visit authentic villages representing Hawaii, Tahiti, Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, and New Zealand. A canoe ride connects the villages, and you can try Tahitian spear throwing or watch Samoan cooking demonstrations. The Polynesian Canoe Pageant is a colorful performance, and a barbecue lunch is included. Bring cash for roadside stands and local shops: many don't take cards. Comfortable walking shoes are essential. The tour involves walking several city blocks. Bags aren't allowed inside Pearl Harbor, but storage is available for $7 per bag. USS Arizona Memorial passes are subject to availability. If advance passes aren't available, you'll join the National Park Service standby line.
