The experience

Your driver picks you up at your Waikiki hotel and drives the loop counterclockwise, starting with Diamond Head and the beachfront estates of Kahala before reaching Halona Blowhole, where seawater shoots through a lava tube as high as 30 feet. The route then climbs to Nuuanu Pali Lookout, a historical landmark from 1795 with panoramic views of coastal cliffs and mountain peaks, before dropping into the windward side to visit Byodo-In Temple, a replica of a historic Japanese Buddhist temple set in manicured grounds, and Mokolii Island, a basalt islet visible from the shore of Kāneʻohe Bay.

Waimea Valley is where the day opens up: you can explore the historic valley and swim in a natural waterfall-fed pool at the top if weather permits (the round-trip tram ride up is optional and costs extra). From there, the tour heads to Haleiwa, the laid-back North Shore surfing town, where you have time to browse boutiques and grab shaved ice. A brief stop at Dole Plantation rounds out the afternoon, with a chance to explore the gift shop and sample Dole Whip before heading back to your hotel.
