The Experience

“You see those oil drops?” our guide asked quietly as we leaned over the rail at the USS Arizona Memorial. “They call them the tears of the Arizona.” I didn’t expect to feel so much standing there — it was oddly silent except for the water lapping below, and even the kids in our group went quiet. The names on the wall hit harder than I thought they would. It felt like everyone was holding their breath together for a minute.

The day started early — Big Island to Honolulu is just a short flight but somehow it felt like we’d landed somewhere completely different. Our driver met us right at the airport with this easy smile and a stack of attraction tickets (I never had to worry about where to go next). After Pearl Harbor, we circled Oahu in that blessedly air-conditioned van. The Koʻolau Mountains looked unreal in the morning mist, all sharp ridges and deep green. At Tropical Farms Macadamia Nut Farm, I tried cracking a nut myself (not as easy as it looks) and ended up laughing with one of the aunties who worked there. She showed me how you’re supposed to do it — her hands way quicker than mine.

Lunch was at Fumi’s Garlic Shrimp Truck up on the North Shore. The garlic smell hit before we even got out of the van — honestly, my fingers still smelled like shrimp hours later. We stopped at roadside fruit stands too; I grabbed banana lumpia because our guide swore it was “the best on island.” He wasn’t wrong. There were surfers out at Waimea Bay, even though it wasn’t competition season, and I could’ve watched them for hours if we didn’t have more ground to cover.

By late afternoon we reached Dole Plantation. The sun was hot but not unbearable — I ducked into the shop mostly for shade but ended up trying Dole Whip (it’s sweet and cold and sort of perfect after a long day). On the drive back toward Waikiki, I realized how much of Oahu we’d actually seen in just one day trip from Big Island. It’s weird how some places stick with you more than you expect; I still think about that quiet moment over the water at Pearl Harbor sometimes.
