The experience

The tour starts with pickup from your Waikiki hotel up to 30 minutes before the listed departure time. You'll head to Pearl Harbor, where your guide provides entry tickets to the Visitor Center and USS Arizona Memorial. Inside the center, a 23-minute documentary covers the December 7, 1941 attack and its aftermath. Then a U.S. Navy-operated boat carries you across the harbor in about 10 minutes to the white memorial structure spanning the sunken USS Arizona. You can look down into the water to see the ship's outline and the oil droplets still rising to the surface: known as "The Tears of the Arizona." A wall inside lists the names of the 1,177 crew members lost. The atmosphere is one of reflection. Visitors are asked to maintain respectful silence.

After Pearl Harbor, the tour circles Oahu's coastline and interior. You'll drive along the windward (northeast) side, passing lush mountains and coastal views, then stop at Tropical Farms Macadamia Nut Farm, a small operation tucked between an ancient fish pond and the Ko'olau Mountains. The route continues to Kualoa Regional Park at Kane'ohe Bay, where you can see Mokoli'i Island just offshore. Lunch is at your own expense. The tour stops at Fumi's Garlic Shrimp Truck, a local favorite, and Kahuku Land Farms stand on the North Shore, where you can buy fresh pineapple, coconut, sugarcane, and local specialties like banana lumpia and macadamia nut bread.

The North Shore leg takes you past the world-famous surf spots (Banzai Pipeline, Waimea Bay, and Sunset Beach), where you can watch surfers even in calmer months. You'll spend time in Haleiwa, the charming North Shore town with wooden storefronts, local boutiques, and a laid-back vibe. The final stop is the Dole Plantation Store, where you can explore pineapple-themed souvenirs, try a Dole Whip soft-serve, and walk among the colorful Rainbow Eucalyptus trees. The tour returns you to Waikiki after 10 hours.

What exactly is the USS Arizona Memorial and what will I see there?

The USS Arizona Memorial is a white, open-air structure built over the remains of the battleship USS Arizona, sunk during the December 7, 1941 attack. Inside, you can look down into the water to see the ship's outline just below the surface and watch oil droplets, called "The Tears of the Arizona", still rising. A wall at the far end bears the names of all 1,177 crew members who died aboard the ship.

Do I need to bring anything or follow any rules at Pearl Harbor?

Bags and purses are not allowed inside Pearl Harbor. You can store them for $7 each. Clear plastic bags like those used at football games are permitted. Wear comfortable shoes since you'll walk through the visitor center and onto the memorial. No swimwear is allowed, and smoking is prohibited on the grounds. Visitors are asked to maintain respectful silence while on the memorial to honor the fallen.

Is lunch included, and what are my options?

Lunch is at your own expense. The tour stops at Fumi's Garlic Shrimp Truck on the North Shore, where you can order garlic shrimp, spicy shrimp, or coconut shrimp served with rice and vegetables. Kahuku Land Farms stand nearby offers fresh local fruit and baked goods. The Pearl Harbor Visitor Center also has food trucks and snack stands if you prefer to eat there.

What happens if I can't get an advance pass to the USS Arizona Memorial?

Advance passes to the USS Arizona Memorial are subject to availability and cannot be guaranteed. If advance passes are unavailable on your tour date, you'll join the National Park Service standby line, where admission is based on available space and is also not guaranteed.

How does pickup work from Waikiki?

Your guide will contact you the day before via text or email with your approximate pickup time and location. Plan for pickup up to 30 minutes or more before the listed tour start time. You'll be returned to your Waikiki hotel at the end of the day.
