The experience

Hotel pickup in Waikiki sets the route down Kalakaua Avenue past Duke Kahanamoku's statue and into the windward side of the island. The tour swings through Kahala (known locally as Hawaii's Beverly Hills), then hits the lookout at Diamond Head before dropping to the southeast coast. Hanauma Bay appears as a cone-shaped volcanic bay full of coral and fish. Halona Blowhole (a lava formation that shoots seawater into the air on windy days) sits next to Eternity Beach, where the film From Here to Eternity was shot. Sandy Beach, also called Breakneck Beach by locals for its powerful shorebreak, serves as the first restroom stop.

The route then passes Makapuu Point, Oahu's easternmost tip, where Rabbit Island sits offshore. Waimanalo, a quieter neighborhood town with roots in the Native Hawaiian community, leads into the valley where Byodo-In Temple stands: a 1968 replica of a Buddhist temple in Japan built to mark the 100th anniversary of Japanese immigration to Hawaii. The temple appeared in the TV series LOST. Tropical Farms Macadamia Nut, on the east coast, offers Kona Coffee and macadamia nut tastings before the tour swings north. Kualoa Regional Park, famous for its photo backdrop of Mokoli'i (Chinaman's Hat), provides another restroom break and a lunch stop at a food truck in Kahuku on the North Shore, where you get a garlic shrimp plate with juice. Pupukea, a small North Shore community known for its beach and scenery, leads to Dole Plantation (which draws over a million visitors yearly), where Dole Whip ice cream rounds out the food stops. A final coffee break at Green World Coffee Farms offers tasting samples before the return to Waikiki.

The tour includes one malasada per person (the Portuguese fried pastry Leonard's Bakery popularized in Hawaii in the 1950s), bottled water throughout, Byodo-In Temple entry, and a small gift at the end. A professional guide leads the group in English or Korean, and the pace is built around stops rather than walking. Most time is spent at viewpoints, food vendors and the plantation grounds.
