The Experience

The van was already waiting when I shuffled out of the hotel lobby—still half-asleep, honestly. Our guide, Keola, handed me this warm breakfast burrito (kalua pig inside, smoky and soft) and said, “You’ll want this before we hit the lookouts.” He wasn’t kidding. Diamond Head looked unreal in the early light, and the air had that salty-sweet smell you only get near the ocean at sunrise. We zipped through Kahala Drive—those palm trees really do lean like they’re showing off—and I tried not to imagine what it’d be like to live in one of those houses.

I didn’t expect to laugh so much on a circle island tour. Keola kept pointing out things I’d never have noticed—like how the cliffs at Lanai Lookout are shaped by old lava flows (he called them “Hawaiian fingerprints”). At Halona Blowhole, we all waited for that first spout of water—someone behind me actually squealed when it shot up. The wind at Makapuʻu Lookout nearly took my hat off. There was a moment at Byodo-In Temple where everything went quiet except for the bell and some birds; I’m not sure why but I felt oddly peaceful there. Maybe it was jet lag or maybe just Hawaii doing its thing.

The North Shore was way more chill than I expected. We stopped for shrimp (Tanaka’s—order ahead so you don’t wait forever), then rolled down to Waimea Bay where the waves were gentle enough that even I dared a swim. Snorkeling in Haleiwa was probably my favorite part—I saw a sea turtle gliding right past me, close enough that I could see its shell markings. The owner of Hawaiian Circle Island Tours learned to swim here as a kid; he told us that while passing out masks and snorkels. It felt personal somehow.

We made quick stops for macadamia nuts (I bought too many) and Dole Whip at Dole Plantation—cold pineapple on a hot day is something else. On the drive back past Pearl Harbor, Keola shared stories about his family’s history during WWII; it was honest and didn’t feel rehearsed. We got dropped off around 2:30 PM, sun-tired but still replaying little moments in my head—the color of the water at Hanauma Bay, the way locals wave as you pass by. Some days just stick with you longer than you expect.
