The experience

The van was already waiting when I shuffled out of the hotel lobby, still half-asleep, honestly. Our guide, Keola, handed me this warm breakfast burrito (kalua pig inside, smoky and soft) and said, “You’ll want this before we hit the lookouts.” He wasn’t kidding. Diamond Head looked unreal in the early light, and the air had that salty-sweet smell you only get near the ocean at sunrise. We zipped through Kahala Drive (those palm trees really do lean like they’re showing off), and I tried not to imagine what it’d be like to live in one of those houses.

I didn’t expect to laugh so much on a circle island tour. Snorkeling in Haleiwa was probably my favorite part. I saw a sea turtle gliding right past me, close enough that I could see its shell markings.
