The experience
The day opens at Café Kaila, the top breakfast spot on Oahu where the line outside tells you everything: French toast, Eggs Benedict, pancakes and omelets all made from scratch. From there the tour moves through the island's quieter side: a macadamia nut orchard where you taste fresh Kona coffee and nuts, then Matsumotos for the shave ice that has been a Haleiwa fixture since 1951. A fruit stand stop lets you pick up fresh mangos, pineapples, strawberries and fried banana lumpias before the group reaches either Dole Plantation (where you can ride a train or walk the corn maze) or heads to lunch at Stonefish Grill in Haleiwa or one of the other featured stops.
The route includes Halona Blowhole, where waves force seawater up to 30 feet through underwater lava tubes and the cove below has appeared in films and music videos. Kualoa Ranch, a 4,000-acre private reserve on the windward side, anchors the middle of the day. You stop for pictures and views throughout. The pace is built to soak in the island rather than rush through it. The van is air-conditioned and has WiFi. The guide speaks English and knows where the locals actually eat.
You pay for all food and activities as you go, so breakfast, shave ice, coffee, fruit and your choice of lunch or dinner come out of pocket. The company requires a minimum of four passengers per booking to run the tour, and children from age three are welcome.
