Half-day Circle Island tour Oahu: Byodo-in Temple & breakfast
Five lookouts, one Japanese temple, and a Hawaiian breakfast in a morning
A half-day circle island tour around Oahu (9am–1pm) with pickup from any Waikiki or Ala Moana hotel, stopping at Diamond Head, Halona Blowhole, Makapuu Lighthouse, Nu'uanu Pali Lookout, and Byodo-in Temple. The tour includes a kalua pig breakfast burrito at a Hawaiian-owned café in Waimanalo, Byodo-in admission, parking fees, and a local guide speaking English. The faster route covers more ground than full-day tours without eating the afternoon.
Step-by-step itinerary
Half-day circle island tour
- Stop at Diamond Head Crater
- Visit Halona Blowhole
- Enjoy views at Makapuu Lighthouse
- Breakfast at Hawaiian café in Waimanalo
- Visit Nu'uanu Pali Lookout
- Tour Byodo-In Temple
The Experience
The tour runs 9am to 1pm, which means you're back with the rest of your day ahead. You start at Diamond Head, Oahu's volcanic landmark, for photos of Waikiki and the Pacific. Then the route moves east along the coast: Halona Blowhole, where waves force water up to 30 feet through an ancient lava tube (best at high tide); Makapuu Lighthouse, with views across to Rabbit Island and the Koolau Mountains; and Nu'uanu Pali Lookout, a ridge with panoramic views of the windward side. The parking fee at Nu'uanu Pali is covered.
Breakfast happens mid-tour at a Hawaiian-owned café in Waimanalo: a kalua pig burrito (smoky shredded pork), plus haupia and poi on the side. Vegan options are available. The final stop is Byodo-in Temple, a replica of a 900-year-old Japanese Buddhist temple set in the Valley of the Temples with gardens, an Amida Buddha statue, and koi ponds. Admission is included. The air-conditioned vehicle picks you up at any hotel in Waikiki or Ala Moana and drops you back there when the tour ends.
A local guide leads the tour and provides Hawaiian history and insider knowledge throughout. The group stays small, and the route is designed to move faster than the standard full-day circle island tours, so you see the same landmarks without spending six or seven hours on the road.

What exactly is the Halona Blowhole and when is the best time to see it?
Halona Blowhole is a natural ocean geyser formed by an ancient lava tube; when waves crash into the shore, water shoots up to 30 feet high. It's best seen during high tide. Nearby Halona Cove is a famous movie location.
Is the Byodo-in Temple admission really included in the tour price?
Yes, Byodo-in Temple admission is included with the tour. It's a replica of a 900-year-old Japanese Buddhist temple in the Valley of the Temples, surrounded by gardens and koi ponds.
Can I get a vegan breakfast instead of the kalua pig burrito?
Yes, vegan options are available. All diet restrictions can be accommodated at the Hawaiian-owned café in Waimanalo where breakfast is served.
Does the tour include hotel pickup and drop-off?
Yes, pickup and drop-off at any hotel in Waikiki or Ala Moana is included. The air-conditioned vehicle collects you at your hotel and returns you there when the tour ends at 1pm.
What's the difference between this half-day tour and a full-day circle island tour?
This half-day tour takes a faster, more efficient route and covers the same major landmarks—Diamond Head, Halona Blowhole, Makapuu, Nu'uanu Pali, and Byodo-in—without the traffic delays of a full-day tour. You're done by 1pm instead of spending six or seven hours on the road.
Is there a guide, and what language does he or she speak?
A local guide leads the tour in English, providing Hawaiian history and insider local knowledge at each stop.
