The experience

Six to eight hours out of Waikiki means you can pack the full circle of Oahu and still be back for a late afternoon swim before dinner. The route itself is the tour: you leave Waikiki heading southeast past Diamond Head, then follow the coast around to Halona Blowhole (where you can see Molokai and Lanai on a clear day), Sandy Beach Park where locals surf the big winter waves, and Makapuu Lighthouse with views across the southeastern side. From there the road climbs into the windward side, where Byodo-In Temple sits at the foot of the Ko'olau Mountains: a replica of Japan's 950-year-old Temple of Equality.

The stops are yours to decide. Some travelers spend time at Waimea Valley for the one-mile walk through the botanical garden to the waterfall. Others skip it and head straight to the North Shore, a seven-mile stretch of coast famous for winter surfing contests at Waimea Bay and Sunset Beach. Haleiwa, the laid-back plantation-era surf town, sits nearby with galleries and shops. You can eat at Fumi's Kahuku Shrimps, a North Shore food truck known for garlic and spicy shrimp, or stop at Tropical Farms Macadamia Nut Farm to sample the local nut and pick up souvenirs. The Dole Plantation in Wahiawa rounds out the inland stops with pineapple gardens, fresh juice and the famous pineapple whip. A coffee farm with free tours and samples also sits along the route if that appeals to you.

Your driver-guide is certified and speaks English, providing insight into Oahu's history, culture and legends as you go. The vehicle is air-conditioned, and bottled water is included. Hotel pickup and drop-off are part of the booking, so you don't arrange transport to the start. Entrance fees to museums, state parks or botanical gardens (ranging from $3 to $25) are separate, and gratuities are not included. If your hotel is outside the Honolulu metropolitan area (North Shore, Koolina or beyond), there's an additional $140 fee for pickup and drop-off.

  • hotel pickup and drop-off within the Honolulu metropolitan area.

Is this one for you?The 6 to 8 hour window gives you the full circle of the island and still leaves the afternoon free for a swim before dinner, so you're not choosing between the tour and beach time. If you want to linger at one or two stops instead of rushing through ten, the private format and customizable route let you set that pace. You're not locked into a group schedule or a fixed itinerary.

Top questions

What is the Byodo-In Temple like, and how much time do you spend there?

Byodo-In Temple is a replica of Japan's 950-year-old Temple of Equality, located at the foot of the Ko'olau Mountains in the Valley of the Temples on Oahu's windward side. The itinerary includes it as a stop, though the exact time you spend there depends on your preferences and what else you choose to visit that day.

Can you visit both the North Shore and Waimea Valley on the same tour?

Yes. Waimea Valley is a one-mile stroll through a botanical garden leading to a waterfall, and the North Shore is a seven-mile stretch of coast known for surfing beaches. Both sit on the north side of the island, so you can include both in your customized itinerary if you want to.

What happens if my hotel is in the North Shore instead of Waikiki?

Pickup and drop-off are included for hotels in the Honolulu metropolitan area. If your hotel is outside that zone (in the North Shore, Koolina or elsewhere), an additional $140 fee applies for the extended pickup and drop-off service.

Does the tour include meals or entrance fees to attractions?

Hotel pickup, drop-off, transportation, bottled water and the guide are included. Entrance fees to museums, state parks or botanical gardens (ranging from $3 to $25) are separate and paid on the day. Meals are not included, though you can stop at places like Fumi's Kahuku Shrimps or the Dole Plantation to eat.

How does the customizable itinerary work? Do you plan it before the tour starts?

You choose which stops to visit from the available attractions around the island's circle route. The operator suggests the best options, and you can plan your route before pickup or decide some stops on the day itself, depending on your preferences and how much time you want to spend at each location.
