The Experience

We started our Grand Circle Island tour of Oahu right after breakfast—our guide, Kaleo, pulled up in this spotless Mercedes van (I’m not really a car person but honestly, the seats felt like clouds). No waiting for stragglers or shuffling through a crowd; it was just us and the road. First stop: Diamond Head lookout. The air had that salty snap I always forget about until I’m near the ocean again. I tried to pronounce “Makapuʻu” properly at our next stop and got it totally wrong; he just grinned and said I’d get it by lunch (spoiler: I didn’t).

The Byodo-In Temple surprised me—I thought it might feel touristy but instead it was quiet except for the bell echoing across the pond. There was this moment when we stood under the big trees and you could hear nothing but birds and distant wind chimes. We wandered through the macadamia nut farm next (I still have some of those roasted ones in my backpack), sampling everything they’d let us try. By late afternoon we hit Haleiwa town—old wooden storefronts, surfboards everywhere—and finished at Dole Plantation for pineapple whip that melted faster than I could eat it. The whole day felt easy because we never rushed; if we wanted to linger somewhere or skip a spot, Kaleo just shrugged and said “your tour.” On the drive back I watched sunlight flicker through palm trees and realized how rare it is to actually relax on vacation—you know?
