The guide rides with you but you set the pace; the route finishes in the Upcountry town of Makawao, where you can stop for lunch before biking back to Haiku. Minimum age 15, recent biking experience required, and you need to be comfortable on a bike for a full morning and early afternoon.

The Experience

The day starts before dawn at the summit of Haleakala, where a NAI-certified guide walks you through the crater and shares the history and geology of the volcano while you take in the views. Once you've spent time at the top, you move to the bikes—custom Kona mountain bikes fitted to your size—and begin the 15-mile descent. This is not a guided convoy where everyone stays together; you ride at your own pace, which means you control how fast you go and where you stop to look around or catch your breath.

The heart of the ride is the 29 switchbacks, a series of tight turns carved into the mountainside that riders consider the best part of the route. You'll pass through ranch land and forest as the elevation drops, and the landscape changes as you descend. A shuttle takes you partway down to a point above Makawao so you skip the steepest section if you want, but the choice is yours. Once you reach Makawao, a historic upcountry town, you can stop for lunch at a local restaurant—you pay separately—and then bike the final stretch back to Haiku where the ride ends.

Everything you need is provided: a custom Kona bike, a Dakine backpack, a Helly Hansen windbreaker and rain pants, a Bell helmet, and an air-conditioned vehicle for the ride up and any shuttles down. The whole experience runs about 7 hours from start to finish. You'll need closed-toe shoes, layered clothing because the summit is cold, sunscreen, and water or snacks to bring along—the operator does not provide those.
