Electric bikes handle the climbing; you handle the trail.

An e-mountain bike tour on a private ranch in Maui for riders who know how to cycle but are new to off-road riding. You climb the lower slopes of Haleakalā from Maui Meadows on smooth trails with ocean views, spot axis deer and native plants, and ride electric bikes that do the hard work of elevation gain. The tour runs three hours and includes a guide, helmet, protective gear, and local refreshments.

Step-by-step itinerary

Beginner-friendly e-mountain bike tour

  • Start at Maui Meadows
  • Ride gently up Haleakalā slopes
  • Enjoy ocean and mountain views
  • Spot local wildlife like axis deer
  • Learn about native plants and landscapes

The Experience

This tour starts in Maui Meadows and takes you onto a private ranch where the terrain is built for learning. You'll climb the lower slopes of Haleakalā at a pace that lets you take in the scenery—sweeping ocean views, volcanic landscapes, and the axis deer that roam the property. The e-mountain bikes do the heavy lifting on inclines, which means you can focus on steering, braking and handling uneven ground without burning out. Your guide points out native plants and explains the land as you ride, turning the physical part into something that makes sense.

The trails here are smooth enough that you're not fighting the bike, but uneven enough that you're learning real off-road skills. Smooth inclines, not steep drops. Packed dirt, not technical rock gardens. If you've ridden a regular bike and can shift gears and brake confidently, this is the place to find out what you can do on unpaved terrain. The electric assist is the difference—it keeps you moving uphill without the leg-breaking effort that stops most beginners cold.

You'll ride for three hours total. Local coffee and banana bread are included, along with a helmet (required), gloves, elbow pads and knee pads. The bike is adjusted to your size before you start. Pickup is included, and you need to be at least 13 years old. The tour is not suitable for first-time riders or anyone with spinal injuries, pregnancy, or cardiovascular concerns that would make sustained climbing risky.

What’s included

  • High-performance electric mountain bike adjusted to your size.
  • helmet, gloves, elbow and knee pads.
  • a guide leading the entire ride.
  • local coffee and local banana bread.
  • hotel or meeting point pickup.

Top questions

What's the difference between this tour and the Grand Tour on the same ranch?

The Experience Tour is designed for beginner riders on smooth, gentle trails with scenic ocean views and wildlife spotting. The Grand Tour is built for confident, experienced riders and includes longer distances, more physical challenge, and expanded scenic access across the ranch.

Do I need to have ridden an electric bike before?

No. You need to know how to ride a regular bicycle and be comfortable steering, braking and shifting gears. The electric assist is intuitive—it kicks in when you pedal and makes climbing easier, so you can focus on learning the off-road terrain.

What happens if I'm not ready for uneven terrain?

The trails on this tour are smooth and gentle by design, but they are unpaved and uneven. If you've never ridden off-road, this tour teaches you how. If you're a first-time rider or novice on any terrain, this tour is not suitable—the Grand Tour is recommended for more experienced riders instead.

What's included in the three hours?

The e-mountain bike (adjusted to your size), helmet, gloves, elbow and knee pads, a guide leading the ride, local coffee and banana bread, and pickup from your hotel or meeting point. The three hours covers the ride itself, not travel time to and from the ranch.

Can I choose a different bike size?

Yes. You can select from Small, Medium/Large, or Extra Large bikes at checkout. The bike will be adjusted to fit you before the tour starts.

What's the terrain like on the lower slopes of Haleakalā?

The private ranch sits on Haleakalā's lower slopes and features smooth trails with gentle inclines, ocean vistas, and volcanic landscapes. You'll ride through native plants and may spot axis deer. The terrain is uneven and unpaved but designed for beginner off-road riders, not technical or steep.
