Haleakala Sunrise Bike Tour Maui: 20-mile descent from 6,500 ft
You ride alone down the volcano at your own speed, not in a line behind others.
A self-guided bike tour on Maui that starts with sunrise at Haleakala's 10,000-foot summit, then descends 20 miles downhill through the famous switchbacks on a custom Kona mountain bike. After the main descent, a shuttle takes you through Upcountry Maui to continue biking through Makawao and finish in Haiku. A NAI-certified guide meets you at the start; the rest of the ride is yours to control. Minimum age is 15, recent biking experience required, and you must be at least 4'10" tall and under 270 lbs.
The Experience
What makes this different from a group bike tour is the self-guided format: you leave the summit after sunrise and descend at your own pace instead of staying with a convoy. The ride covers 15 miles of downhill through the world-renowned 29 switchbacks—a section you'll experience twice—while the guide stays with you but doesn't dictate speed or stops. You control when to rest, when to push, and how long to linger at viewpoints. The descent starts at 6,500 feet, just outside the National Park entrance, and the terrain is all downhill, which means the physical demand is managing your brakes and balance, not climbing.
After the main descent, a shuttle takes you through Upcountry Maui to a point above Makawao Town, where you bike through the town itself and continue on to Haiku. The full day runs about 7 hours from start to finish. You're outfitted with a custom Kona mountain bike, Helly Hansen windbreaker suit, Bell helmet, DAKINE backpack and gloves; entrance to Haleakala National Park is included. The guide is there to brief you on the route and answer questions, but once you're on the bike, the day is built around your rhythm, not a group's schedule.
Meet at 810 Haiku Rd in Haiku before dawn; you'll be shuttled up to the summit in time for sunrise. Bring closed-toe shoes, layered clothing (it's cold at the top), a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Water and snacks are your responsibility, and if you want breakfast after the ride, Makawao and Haiku both have options where you pay separately. You need recent biking experience and a moderate fitness level to handle the technical switchbacks and the long descent.

How cold is it at the top of Haleakala at sunrise?
The summit sits at 10,000 feet, and sunrise temperatures on Maui's Haleakala typically range from the 40s to low 50s Fahrenheit, which is why layered clothing and a hat are essential. You'll warm up as you descend and the sun rises higher.
Do I have to stay with a group the whole time, or can I ride my own pace?
The self-guided format means you set your own pace on the descent—you're not locked to a group convoy. The guide briefs you at the start and is available, but once you're riding the switchbacks, you control how fast or slow you go and where you stop.
What happens if I can't finish the 20-mile ride?
The shuttle is available throughout the day, so if you need to stop early or skip the final stretch through Makawao and Haiku, you can ride in the vehicle instead. The main descent from the summit is the centerpiece; the Upcountry section after the shuttle is shorter and flatter.
Is there food included, or do I need to bring my own?
Food is not included in the tour price. You should bring snacks and water for the ride itself. After you finish in Haiku, both Makawao and Haiku have cafes and restaurants where you can buy breakfast or lunch on your own.
What's the difference between the switchbacks section and the rest of the ride?
The 29 switchbacks are the most technical part of the descent—tight, winding turns that require focus and brake control. You'll experience them twice as part of the 15-mile downhill section from 6,500 feet. The rest of the ride, after the shuttle takes you to Upcountry Maui, is gentler terrain through Makawao and Haiku.
Do I need to have a lot of biking experience?
Recent biking experience is required because the descent involves technical switchbacks and long braking sections. You don't need to be an expert, but you should be comfortable handling a mountain bike on steep, winding terrain and managing your speed downhill.
