The Experience

I didn’t expect the air up there to feel that cold — like someone left the fridge open on top of Maui. We stood at the edge of Haleakala, shivering a bit, and our guide (I think his name was Kimo?) handed out windbreakers and grinned like this was all normal. The sun wasn’t fully up yet and you could smell eucalyptus somewhere behind us. I kept thinking, “We’re really about to ride bikes down from here?” but nobody else seemed nervous.

We started pedaling right where the park entrance is, just above 6,500 feet. The first few turns felt wobbly — maybe it was nerves or maybe my hands were stiff from the cold — but after a couple of those famous switchbacks, something clicked. Kimo rode ahead, calling out little stories about ranches and old paniolo (cowboy) towns. At one point he pointed out a patch of silvery grass and said it only grows at this altitude. I tried to remember the name but honestly forgot it two minutes later. The views kept changing: sometimes you’d see both coasts at once, then suddenly you’re in pine trees or passing a field full of cows who looked as confused as I felt.

We stopped for snacks in Makawao — which is apparently still a real cowboy town, even if most folks these days wear surf shorts instead of boots. Someone had fresh banana bread (the kind that sticks to your fingers) and I swear I’ve never tasted anything so good after riding downhill for an hour. There was this moment when the whole group just went quiet eating under a jacaranda tree — not awkward, just peaceful. You could hear chickens somewhere nearby and the faint sound of someone sweeping a porch.

The last stretch into Paia was warmer — you could feel salt in the air again as we got closer to sea level. My legs were jelly but in that good way, like after swimming too long. We rolled back into town around lunchtime, helmets askew, laughing about who almost missed that last turn near the bakery. I still think about that first blast of cold air up top whenever I see my bike back home… makes me want to do it all over again someday.
