The experience
“You ever seen the city from up here?” That’s what our guide, Marco, asked as we stepped out at Griffith Observatory. I hadn’t. The air was a bit crisp for LA, not cold, just sharp enough to wake you up. We stood there for a minute, not talking much, just taking in that kind of hazy morning light over Los Angeles. He pointed out the Hollywood sign (it really is smaller than you expect) and told us how locals come up here to watch meteor showers. I liked that detail: makes the place feel less like a postcard and more like someone’s backyard.
After that we headed down to Hollywood Boulevard. It’s noisy and messy in a way that feels honest: buskers playing old Michael Jackson songs, families posing with Spiderman impersonators (one of them winked at me). Marco showed us his favorite star on the Walk of Fame. It wasn’t who I expected, but I won’t spoil it. There’s something weirdly satisfying about seeing names you’ve only ever seen on screens right under your feet. The sun started warming up by then and you could smell street pretzels drifting through the crowd.
Beverly Hills came next, all palm trees and those boutiques on Rodeo Drive that look too fancy to even walk into. We didn’t stop long (I mean, my wallet was grateful), but we did see a bright green Lamborghini parked outside one shop (Marco said he’d never actually seen anyone buy anything there but “it’s all about being seen.” He laughed when I tried to pronounce ‘Beverly’ with an LA accent) butchered it completely.
The coast felt like a different city altogether. Third Street Promenade had this easygoing buzz. People walking dogs, some guy playing jazz on a saxophone near the pier. By the time we got to Venice Beach, everything smelled like sunscreen and saltwater. The canals were quieter than I expected: almost peaceful compared to the boardwalk where skateboarders zipped past us like they owned the place (maybe they do). It was hard to leave honestly. I still think about those last few minutes sitting on the sand before heading back.
