A floating lilly pad lets you drift and play in water too shallow for most boats to reach.

Private snorkeling at Crab Island, Destin, means renting your own luxury tri-toon pontoon with a captain, then anchoring at the submerged sandbar to swim, paddleboard and snorkel in the Emerald Coast shallows. The boat holds up to ten passengers and includes a floating lilly pad, inflatable paddleboards, masks, snorkel gear, cooler and Bluetooth speaker; you bring your own ice and drinks. The trip runs four hours and only cancels if severe weather or a small craft advisory is issued.

Step-by-step itinerary

Private pontoon cruise to Crab Island

  • Board luxury tri-toon pontoon
  • Cruise through Destin emerald waters
  • Navigate to Crab Island sandbar
  • Anchor and enjoy floating inflatables

The Experience

The tri-toon pontoon is yours alone for the afternoon. You cruise through Destin's emerald waters with your captain navigating toward Crab Island, a giant submerged sandbar where the water stays shallow enough to anchor and play. The boat comes rigged with a floating lilly pad—the kind you climb onto and drift from, or use as a base to jump back into the water—plus inflatable paddleboards, snorkel masks and fins. A cooler sits on deck for your drinks, and a Bluetooth speaker plays music while you're anchored.

Once anchored at Crab Island, the four hours are yours to spend however you want. Some groups spend most of it in the water snorkeling or paddling; others float on the lilly pad and swim between the boat and the shallows. The captain stays with the boat and can point out what's around you, but the pace and the activities are entirely up to your group. Infants can come along if they sit on an adult's lap; the boat suits all fitness levels.

Bring your own ice and drinks—the cooler is there to keep them cold. The captain's gratuity is arranged separately at the time you book. Weather only cancels the trip if a small craft advisory or severe weather warning is issued; you'll get a full refund if that happens. The pontoon has a bimini shade overhead, so you're not exposed to the sun the whole time you're anchored.

Operated by Emerald Island Charters

Is this one for you?Book this if you're staying in Destin without a car or don't want to arrange your own boat—the captain handles the navigation and anchoring, so your group just shows up and spends the afternoon in the water at your own pace. The private boat means no strangers on board and no fixed itinerary, which matters if your kids move fast or your group wants to linger on the lilly pad.

Top questions

What's actually at Crab Island that makes it worth snorkeling?

Crab Island is a submerged sandbar in Destin's shallow Emerald Coast waters where the depth lets you wade, paddleboard and snorkel without a deep drop-off. The shallows attract small fish and marine life, and the sandbar itself is a natural gathering spot where the water stays calm enough for paddleboards and floating.

Can I bring my kids on the private pontoon snorkeling trip?

Yes, children of any age can come. Infants must sit on an adult's lap, and the boat suits all fitness levels, so there's no age or ability restriction. You'll have up to ten passengers total on the tri-toon, including your group.

How long is four hours on the water, and how much of it is actually snorkeling?

The trip is four hours total, which includes the cruise from Destin out to Crab Island and the time anchored there. Once anchored, you decide how much time to spend in the water snorkeling, paddleboarding or floating on the lilly pad—there's no set schedule, so your group controls the rhythm.

What happens if the weather turns bad?

The trip only cancels if a small craft advisory or severe weather warning is issued by the National Weather Service. If that happens, you'll receive a full refund. The pontoon has a bimini shade, so you have overhead cover while anchored.

Do I need to bring snorkel gear, or is it included?

Masks and snorkel gear are included on the private pontoon. Bring your own ice and drinks for the cooler; the captain will have the boat stocked with the speaker, paddleboards, lilly pad and all snorkel equipment ready when you board.

Is there a guide who explains what we're seeing in the water?

Your captain stays with the boat and can answer questions about what's around you, but this is a private charter where your group sets the pace and activities. The captain doesn't lead a structured tour—you're free to snorkel, paddleboard and float on your own schedule.
