The experience

Old Faithful erupts on a schedule (every 44 minutes to two hours since 2000), which means you'll time your arrival to catch it. That predictability is what lets the tour pack two full days of the parks' most dramatic sites without racing through them. Day one starts in Grand Teton, where you stop at Oxbow Bend (one of the most photographed spots in the park, with Mount Moran reflected in the Snake River on calm mornings) and the Mormon Row Historic District, where century-old barns still stand. Then you cross into Yellowstone to walk the boardwalk at West Thumb Geyser Basin and spend time at the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, where the Lower Falls drop into a canyon carved in vivid yellows and oranges.

Day two is built around wildlife and geothermal features. Lamar Valley, in Yellowstone's northeastern corner, earned the nickname "American Serengeti" because bison, elk, wolves, grizzly and black bears, coyotes and foxes roam openly across the valley floor. Your naturalist guide knows where to look and what the animals are doing. After Lamar Valley, you visit Mammoth Hot Springs (a hillside of travertine terraces built over thousands of years by mineral-rich hot water), and finish at Old Faithful, where you'll watch the geyser erupt and tour the Old Faithful Inn, a massive log structure built in 1903 that still stands as the largest log building in the world.

The tour includes pickup and drop-off in Jackson or Teton Village, an air-conditioned vehicle, breakfast, lunch, snacks and beverages throughout both days, and an overnight stay in either Cooke City or West Yellowstone, Montana. You'll need sturdy walking shoes and a jacket. The parks sit at high elevation and weather changes fast.
