The Experience

Hands gripping the wheel, I nudged our little buggy out of Havensight, half-laughing because it felt like we’d borrowed someone’s toy car for the day. Our local guy at pickup—can’t remember his name, just that he had a Red Sox cap—handed us a crumpled map and circled his favorite food truck near Brewers Bay (“get the johnnycakes if they’re hot,” he said). The air was thick with salt and something sweet I couldn’t place. We rolled the windows down (well, there aren’t really windows), and set off along Charlotte Amalie Harbor, dodging a chicken or two on the way.

Emerald Beach was our first stop—white sand so soft it squeaked under my feet. We stayed longer than planned, just floating and watching planes skim over the water. Nobody hurried us; I liked that. Afterward, we wound through the University of St. Thomas campus (I almost missed the turn), then parked by Brewers Bay Beach. Saw two kids chasing each other with palm fronds, and later spotted what might’ve been a sea turtle head bobbing up—can’t swear to it though. Lunch from that food truck? Greasy fingers, spicy fish, lime juice stinging a tiny cut on my thumb—worth it.

The climb up to Mountain Top was slow going; our buggy isn’t exactly built for speed but that’s part of the fun. Up there, banana daiquiris are apparently non-negotiable (the bartender said so). The view—patches of blue and green islands scattered below—is something I still think about when I’m stuck in traffic back home. Next came Drake’s Seat—a little stone bench with history layered into it; our guide said Sir Francis Drake used to watch for enemy sails here, which made me feel oddly small in time.

Magens Bay was our last big stop before heading back—water warm enough to forget about everything else for an hour or two. There’s a beach bar if you want it (we did), souvenir shop if you need proof you were here (I caved). Sunburn crept up on me while we watched pelicans dive-bombing for fish. By then I’d stopped checking the clock altogether.
