The experience

The tour covers Punta del Este's main sights in a single afternoon, moving between seven stops where you get off the minibus to photograph and explore. You'll see the Hand of Punta del Este, the iconic monument of a figure emerging from the earth that defines the resort; the lighthouse built in 1860 with materials shipped from Europe; and the port where sea lions live alongside luxury yachts. The undulating bridge, designed by engineer Leonel Viera and opened in 1965, connects several of these points and is worth a stop on its own.

The Ralli Museum holds one of the world's most important collections of contemporary Latin American art, and your entry is included. You'll see works by Salvador Dalí among other pieces. Punta Ballena offers a viewpoint over the bay and local crafts and souvenirs. Gorlero Avenue, the main downtown street, is where the shops, restaurants and souvenir stalls cluster. The guide speaks English, Spanish or Portuguese throughout, and you get bottled water and WiFi on board the air-conditioned van.

Is this one for you?Choose the language your guide speaks when you book, since the commentary is delivered in English, Spanish or Portuguese and you need to follow the guide's explanations at each stop. The shared minibus format means you travel with other cruise passengers, so this works well if you want company and don't mind a fixed schedule hitting all seven landmarks in one afternoon.
