The experience

The tour starts with Casapueblo, the snow-white architectural landmark perched on sea cliffs that was both the residence and artwork of Uruguayan artist Carlos Páez Vilaró. From there you move to Brava Beach to see the Hand of Punta del Este: the giant sculpture by Mario Irarrázabal that has become the city's most recognizable image, meant to symbolize a drowning swimmer and warn of the beach's strong waves. The guide takes you along the entire Brava boulevard and into neighborhoods like San Rafael, Rincón del Indio and Beverly Hills.

Next is the Port of Punta del Este, where luxury yachts sit alongside artisanal fishing boats. Sea lions gather on the pier waiting for fishermen to toss them scraps, and they stay close enough that you can photograph them. You'll also see the 1860 lighthouse (25 meters high, built with materials shipped from Europe), and the Our Lady of the Candelaria Church, a mid-20th-century landmark with a striking sky-blue and white façade. The tour ends at Gorlero Avenue, the main downtown strip lined with shops and restaurants, and crosses the undulating bridge into La Barra to explore its commercial center and narrow streets.

Because this is a private tour, the guide adjusts the pace and route to fit what interests you. You travel in an air-conditioned vehicle with WiFi on board, and the driver handles all navigation. The tour works for families with infants and small children, and wheelchair users can join: folding wheelchairs can be transported, though the person travels in a regular seat rather than in the chair itself.
