The experience

The tour starts at the port and moves through Montevideo's downtown core. You'll stop at Zabala Square to see the monument of the city's founder, then move to the first square ever founded in Montevideo: the Cathedral and the old craftsmen's fair are nearby. Independence Plaza comes next, where the mausoleum of General Artigas stands with two soldiers guarding it. The Palacio Salvo, once the tallest building in South America, and the Estevez Palace (now a presidential history museum) frame the square.

From there the guide takes you to the Legislative Palace, seat of Uruguay's General Assembly, and then to the Agricultural Market, a National Historic Monument built between 1906 and 1912. If your group wants to enter the Centennial Stadium (venue of the first FIFA World Cup in 1930), that ticket costs about three dollars per person and is separate. The route then opens onto the Rambla, the long avenue that borders the Río de la Plata, where you stop for photos at the city sign and take in the view. On the way back, you pass through the Carrasco neighborhood, known for its mansions and tree-lined streets, and along the coast before returning to the port. If time allows, the guide can drop you at the Port Market for lunch or shopping before heading back.

You book by group size: two or three passengers, four, five or six, seven or eight, up to sixteen, or a minivan for up to four. The guide is yours alone. No other travelers join. The vehicle is air-conditioned, and bottled water and WiFi are on board. A full-day upgrade (six to seven hours) adds a mate tasting, a traditional chivito or asado with Tannat wine, and more time in neighborhoods and markets to move at a slower pace.
