The experience

The tour starts at your hotel or a pickup point you choose, in a private car with air conditioning and WiFi. A local guide fluent in English, Spanish or Portuguese meets you there and shapes the day around what you want to see. If you're drawn to the old city, you'll walk through neighborhoods filled with art deco and historic architecture, pass the Legislative Palace (a $3 entry if you want to go inside), and stand in Independence Plaza with its 1928 Palacio Salvo. If gardens matter more, El Prado is a quiet residential district with a botanical garden, rose arches, a Japanese garden and the Blanes museum of Uruguayan art. The route is yours to steer.

Most tours move east along the Rambla, a 24-kilometer coastal avenue, then into Carrasco's upscale neighborhoods. A stop at the Port Market: a 19th-century building packed with restobars specializing in Uruguayan parrillada (grilled meat), is optional and often becomes lunch. The Fortress of Cerro offers a high point to see the city laid out below. The guide carries the knowledge. You carry the map. Bottled water comes with you the whole way.

The tour runs four to six hours depending on how many stops you choose and how long you linger. Museum fees vary ($3 to $14 for most, $300 Uruguayan pesos for the Estadio Centenario football museum if you want that one), and you decide whether to add them. You can also request drone photography to save the experience, arranged with your guide. The car fits wheelchairs and strollers if they fold. If they don't, the operator can upgrade the vehicle for an additional cost.
