The experience
The tour starts with pickup from your hotel and moves through the historic center on foot, stopping at the sites that shaped the city. Independence Plaza holds the monument to José Gervasio Artigas, the national hero whose independence movement defined Uruguay. From there you walk to the Teatro Solís, South America's oldest theater, which opened in 1856 and still seats 1,500 in its main hall. The Gateway of the Citadel, a remnant of the 18th-century Spanish fortress that once stood where the plaza now sits, anchors the military history of the place.
The route threads through Sarandí Pedestrian Street, the main artery of the Old City, and passes Plaza Constitución, where the Metropolitan Cathedral stands. The cathedral's neoclassical structure dates to 1804, though a church has occupied the site since 1740. Zabala Square, laid out by a French landscape designer in 1890, breaks the grid pattern of the historic quarter. The walk ends at the Port Market, a gastronomic hub since 1868 that supplied ships and wealthy families and has become the city's gathering place for food and drink.
Your guide handles the route and the stories. You move at the pace that suits the group. Transport between stops happens in an air-conditioned vehicle, and the tour includes bottled water and snacks along the way. The driver and guide are trained to the operator's standard, and the vehicle condition is part of the booking promise.
