The Experience

The morning didn’t start as planned—our ship docked half an hour late, and I was sure we’d missed our Montevideo city tour. But there was Martín, holding a “Blanco Tour” sign, grinning like he’d been waiting just for us. He waved us over with this relaxed Uruguayan patience I wish I could bottle up. We squeezed into the van (small group, thank god—not one of those herds), and he handed out cold water while joking about how even locals get lost in Ciudad Vieja’s winding streets.

I liked that Martín didn’t rush us through Plaza Independencia; he let us linger while he told stories about Artigas under the mausoleum—his voice echoing a bit in the open square. The air smelled faintly of roasted coffee from some café nearby. At one point, an old man shuffled past with a basket of pastries and winked at me when I tried to pronounce “bizcochos.” My Spanish is hopeless but people here don’t seem to mind. On Avenida 18 de Julio, we stopped to watch a street artist painting bright splashes on the sidewalk—I almost forgot we were on a schedule.

The highlight for me was the Mercado Agrícola. It’s noisy in a comforting way—kids laughing, vendors calling out deals on fresh cheese, the clatter of coins on metal counters. I grabbed a tiny dulce de leche tart (still thinking about it) and listened to Martín explain why Uruguayans are obsessed with mate tea. He offered us a sip from his thermos—bitter as promised—and laughed when I made a face. The whole place smells like fruit and bread dough rising; it’s hard not to feel hungry every five minutes.

We ended at the Port Market where you can hear knives hitting chopping boards inside the parrillas. Some folks peeled off for steak or souvenirs before heading back to the ship—I just stood outside for a minute, letting it all sink in: sea breeze mixing with wood smoke, voices bouncing off old stone walls. I didn’t expect to feel so at home in four hours, but Montevideo sneaks up on you like that.
