The Experience

"You'll forget you're in Dubai the moment the cold hits your face," one of the staff told me as I stepped through the airlock doors. And they weren't wrong — Ski Dubai sits inside the Mall of the Emirates maintaining temperatures between -1 and 2 degrees Celsius year-round, which means you're trading the 40-degree heat outside for an 85-meter-high indoor mountain with five different ski runs. The whole thing is 22,500 square meters of actual snow, not the synthetic stuff, and it's the Middle East's largest indoor ski resort. You get a locker, winter gear (jacket, trousers, boots, gloves, helmet if you're under 13), and unlimited chairlift access for the day.

The slopes themselves are the main draw if you ski or snowboard — you need intermediate level 2 skills to access them, and you get two hours on the runs included with your ticket. But if you're not a skier or you want to mix it up, the snow park has six other things going: tobogganing, a giant ball you roll down the slope, bobsled, tube run, bumper cars, and the Snow Bullet zipline if you're tall enough (kids need to be 125 cm minimum, over 8 years old, and weigh at least 30 kg). There's also the Mountain Thriller ride with unlimited access. The snow cavern is there too if you just want to walk around and take photos without committing to anything athletic.

Entry includes all the gear — you don't rent skis or a snowboard separately, and the disposable socks mean you're not wearing someone else's foot sweat. Helmets are compulsory for anyone under 13. The only real constraint is that kids under 2 aren't allowed, and if you have spinal issues, are pregnant, or have cardiovascular concerns, this probably isn't the right fit. You can't bring your own food or drinks in, but there are winter-themed cafes inside, and the whole thing is connected to the Mall of the Emirates if you need to grab something after. Public transport gets you there, though most people just take a taxi or ride-share from their hotel.
