The Experience

“You know, we change the designs every season,” our ticket guy grinned as he handed us our passes. I didn’t really get what that meant until we walked in — the air was thick with this sweet, almost dizzying smell of flowers. It’s not quiet, either; there’s laughter everywhere, people posing under heart-shaped arches or next to that massive Emirates plane made out of petals. I kept stopping just to stare at the colors — it’s like someone turned up the saturation on real life.

I’d read about Dubai Miracle Garden before, but seeing it is something else. There are these Disney characters built entirely from flowers (Mickey looked a bit sunburnt, honestly), and kids running around trying to spot them all. We wandered along winding paths, sometimes bumping elbows with families taking selfies or couples holding hands under tunnels of blooms. At one point I just sat down on a bench because my senses were kind of overloaded — in a good way. The sun was warm but not unbearable, and there was this faint hum from sprinklers somewhere behind the scenes.

No guide here — you just go at your own pace, which I liked. We found ourselves doubling back to see the A380 plane again (it’s huge), and then got lost in a maze of 3D flower shapes that looked different depending on where you stood. There are so many photo ops it gets a bit ridiculous; I tried to take a picture for a group from Kerala and ended up chatting with them about which display they liked best (the butterfly house won). Honestly, I still think about how surreal it felt — all that color in the middle of Dubai’s desert heat.
