The Experience

Salt clung to my lips as we zipped out from the marina, the city’s glass towers shrinking behind us. Our guide—Ali, who grew up in Deira—pointed out the best spot to stash our bags on the pontoon boat before we hopped onto the jet skis. The water was warm, almost bath-like, and you could smell sunscreen and engine oil mixed with that salty Gulf breeze.

The first few minutes felt wild—waves slapping against the hull, laughter echoing over the engines. We paused near Ain Dubai, that giant Ferris wheel looming above Bluewaters Island. Ali snapped a few photos for us (honestly, I looked ridiculous in those goggles). Then we cruised toward Palm Jumeirah—the world’s largest man-made island. You don’t realize how massive it is until you’re right there on the water, looking up at those villas and hotels stacked along its fronds.

On the way back, I caught a glimpse of Burj Al Arab glinting in the sun. There were a couple of local fishermen casting lines off their tiny boats nearby—one waved as we passed. Back at JBR Beach, we rinsed off with bottled water Ali handed out. My arms were sore but it was worth every second.
