The Experience
“You see that curve? Lean into it — trust me!” That’s what our instructor, Ahmed, shouted over the engine as we zipped out from the beach in Dubai. I’d never been on a jet ski this fast before (Yamaha 1800cc, he said — sounded impressive). The water was warm but the wind hit sharp against my face. I could smell salt and something faintly sweet from a nearby café — or maybe that was just my nerves. There were a few other riders too, mostly locals, laughing and showing off for someone filming onshore.
We circled close to the Burj Al Arab — it looked even more surreal from the water, all glass and white curves catching the sun. Ahmed slowed down so we could take photos (he insisted on getting my “best side” — not sure he succeeded but I appreciated the effort). He played some music through the Bluetooth speakers on the jet ski. Not what I expected but honestly? It made me relax a bit. The Sheikh Islands were off in the distance; we didn’t go all the way there but got close enough for a good look.
Afterwards, my arms were jelly and I just sat on the sand for a minute. Someone handed out tiny paper cups of coffee — strong and almost chocolatey. A couple from Lebanon tried out kayaks while their kids splashed around nearby. There’s a little changing room right by the lockers where you can leave your stuff (I always worry about that). When I finally rinsed off in the shower, I realized how salty my lips tasted. Still think about that view of Dubai’s skyline from out there — kind of makes you want to do it again.
