The Experience

The first thing I remember is the color — that kind of burnt gold you only get in the late afternoon, just outside Dubai. Our driver, Kareem, pulled up right on time and by the time we reached the edge of the desert, the city felt like a different world. The 4x4 dune bashing started fast — honestly, my stomach did a little flip at that first steep drop. Everyone laughed when I let out a pretty undignified yelp. Windows down, you could smell warm sand and something faintly sweet in the air (maybe dates? Or just my nerves).

I’d never ridden a quad bike before and it showed. The guide — Ahmed, I think? — gave me this patient look as he explained how not to tip over. Once I got going though, it was pure freedom. The engine buzzed under me and all I could see were endless ripples of sand. There was this moment where I stopped just to listen: nothing but wind and our own laughter echoing across the dunes. That silence is kind of rare these days.

Sandboarding was trickier than it looked; my shoes filled up instantly and I wiped out twice before sort of getting the hang of it. Afterward came the camel ride — slower, swaying, almost meditative if you ignore how awkwardly you have to sit (my friend tried to take a selfie and nearly dropped her phone). There was a falcon there too; its handler let us hold it for photos. The sun dipped lower and everything turned coppery-pink — I still think about that light sometimes when I'm stuck in traffic back home.
