The Experience

We tumbled into the 4x4 just as the sky was starting to wake up — honestly, I was barely awake myself. The drive out from Dubai felt quick with our guide, Ahmed, pointing out how the city fades so suddenly into nothing but sand. There’s this weird silence when you first step out at the edge of the desert. It’s not empty though — you hear your own shoes crunching on cold grains and smell something dry and sweet in the air (maybe that’s just how sand smells at sunrise?). I was nervous about the quad bike at first; Ahmed grinned and said, “You’ll get used to it in five minutes.” He was right. The engine rumbled under me and suddenly we were flying over these red dunes, wind stinging my cheeks. At one point I got stuck halfway up a slope — embarrassing — but Ahmed didn’t even tease me (much).

We stopped on top of this massive dune where everything looked gold and endless. I tried sandboarding next; it’s trickier than it looks, especially if you’re still shaky from the quad bike adrenaline. There was this one kid from another group who absolutely wiped out and everyone cheered him on anyway. After that came the camel ride — slower than I expected, almost meditative. The camels are taller than they seem in photos (and bumpier too). Our handler, Saeed, told us their names in Arabic; Li laughed when I tried to repeat them — probably butchered it. By then my shoes were full of sand and my arms felt heavy but in a good way.

I keep thinking about that moment sitting quietly on the dune while everyone took photos — sun warming my face, nothing around except distant city haze and a few birds overhead. It wasn’t what I pictured when I thought “Dubai day trip,” but maybe that’s why it stuck with me.
