The experience

I didn’t expect the desert to smell like anything but dust, but there was this faint sweetness in the air when we stepped out of the Land Cruiser near Lehbab. Maybe it was the morning, or just my nerves. Our driver, Ahmed, handed us helmets for the quad bikes and grinned like he knew exactly how clumsy I’d look (he was right). The first few minutes were bumpy and loud: engines buzzing, sand flying up into my shoes. I kept thinking I’d tip over but somehow didn’t.

Ahmed kept shouting encouragement over the wind (“Faster! You can do it!”), which made me laugh so hard I nearly missed a turn. There were other groups out there too, but it still felt wide open.
