The experience

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is the sole place in Uganda where you can trek white rhinos on foot and get close to one of Africa's Big 5 without spending days searching on a traditional safari. A ranger guide leads you into the territory where the rhinos live, walking through savannah and wooden vegetation to find them in their wild habitat. The sanctuary holds 350 bird species, among them the Shoe bill stork, one of Africa's most sought-after birds, so sightings often include more than just the rhinos themselves.

The day starts with pickup from your hotel and a road transfer to the sanctuary. Once you arrive, you enter the rhino habitat on foot with well-trained rangers who know where the animals move and how to approach them safely. Beyond the white rhinos, the sanctuary is home to kobs, warthogs, monkeys, hippos and water bucks, so the walk turns up a mix of wildlife. Lunch is included partway through the day, and the full outing runs about seven and a half hours from pickup to return.
