The experience
Seven to eight hours from Kampala gets you to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary and back. Your driver picks you up from your hotel, drives you to the reserve, and a ranger takes over for the trekking part. You walk on foot to locate the rhinos (how long that takes depends on where they are that day), then spend at least an hour with them once you find them. The sanctuary sits in countryside where you're likely to spot other animals: monkeys, warthogs, antelope and numerous birds move through the same landscape. After the trek, you return to the lodge area for lunch before the drive back to Kampala.
The tour runs every day of the week, so you can fit it around the rest of your itinerary. Gumboots are provided, and the operator handles all the logistics: entrance fees, the ranger's time, the vehicle, water and lunch are built in. Because it's designed for solo travelers, small groups and larger parties equally, you're not locked into a set departure time or group size. The conservation work at Ziwa is part of why the operator runs this tour. Booking supports the effort to protect the white rhino population.
