Step-by-step itinerary
Rhino tracking at Ziwa Sanctuary
- Pick up from Kampala
- Travel to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary
- Briefing by rangers on safety
- Track rhinos on foot with guide
- Observe rhinos for over an hour
The experience
Five to six hours gets you from Kampala to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary and back, with the actual tracking happening in the cooler morning hours when the rhinos are most active. Your driver and guide collect you from your hotel in Kampala and drive you to the sanctuary, the only place in Uganda where the surviving rhinos are kept. Once you arrive, the rangers brief you on what to expect and how to behave around the animals: rhinos can turn aggressive if they feel threatened, so following their instructions is not optional.
The trek itself is done on foot with an armed guide at your side. You move through the sanctuary searching for rhinos, and when you locate them, you stay and watch for over an hour as they go about their day: feeding, moving through the park, relating to each other. The timing matters: the quest starts early because high temperatures drive the rhinos to shade and rest, making them harder to find and less active. Lunch is included after the trek.
This is a short trip from Kampala or Entebbe, built around one clear goal: to see one of Africa's big five mammals in the only place in Uganda where they survive. The sanctuary is small and focused, not a sprawling reserve, so the experience is concentrated and direct.
