The Experience

I didn’t expect to laugh so much before noon, but that’s how it started—somewhere off Provo, sun already sharp, our small group half awake and half giddy. The captain cracked a joke about “Caribbean time” as we headed out toward the reef. The water was this wild blue-green I can’t really describe (my photos don’t do it justice), and when I slid in for the first snorkel stop, the salt stung my lips but the fish didn’t seem to care. Our guide, Tasha, pointed out a turtle gliding by—she called him “the old man,” which made me smile for no real reason.

The first shipwreck near Pine Cay looked almost gentle under the water—like it belonged there. I tried diving down but mostly just floated and listened to my own breathing through the snorkel. Some folks wandered to the empty beach; I just watched the light flicker over rusted metal and thought about how things end up where they end up. Then we circled around to La Famille Express, which is less sunken and more stranded—huge and weirdly beautiful against the horizon. Tasha told us stories about storms and why it’s still there; her voice carried over the engine noise while someone else snapped photos like crazy.

Noah’s Ark Floating Bar was louder than I expected—music bouncing over the water, people already dancing even though it wasn’t even 2pm. Lunch was jerk chicken with peas and rice (I picked at mine because I was still salty from swimming), plus rum punch that tasted way too easygoing for its strength. There was this moment when I just sat at the edge of the deck with my feet dangling above turquoise nothing, listening to strangers laugh behind me. It felt good not to have anywhere else to be.
