The Experience

I was already half-soaked before I realized how see-through the kayak actually was — you could watch your paddle slice right into the blue-green water, almost like floating on glass. Our guide, Janelle, waved us forward with a grin and pointed at something darting under the surface. “Baby lemon shark,” she said, just as I nearly dropped my paddle in surprise. The air smelled salty but fresh, maybe a little earthy from the mangroves. Sun kept shifting behind clouds — warm one minute, then a cool breeze off the water.

I’d never been in Mangrove Cay before this day trip in Turks & Caicos. The place is alive: turtles poked their heads up (one looked straight at me — swear it did), stingrays glided by so quietly I almost missed them. Janelle told us about how the mangroves work like nurseries for all these creatures; she seemed to know every ripple and shadow. At one point I tried to say “hello” to her in Creole — she laughed and corrected me, which honestly made me feel more welcome than if I’d gotten it right.

There were moments when everyone went quiet except for the soft splash of paddles and that gentle rustle from the trees. Chips tasted way better than they should have after an hour out there — maybe it’s just being hungry or maybe salt air does something to food. We drifted for a while longer before heading back, sun on our backs, still spotting shapes moving below us. Sometimes I think about that slow glide over clear water when city noise gets too much — wish I could bottle that feeling.
